GDSK is a small, friendly family service that provides people of any age from 5 years old who have learning disabilities and special needs to access activities in the community in Cumbria and the South Lakes.

I (Mike) started this service due to the lack of services provided for people with disabilities, and having years of experience, I decided it was about time they had more opportunities. Pauline is a community nurse and Graham and David are both support workers for the NHS. David has completed an NVQ 3 in health and social care and will be starting mental health nurse training in March 2007 so the family have got and are always gaining plenty of experience and knowledge for the service that we provide.

The service also makes sure of people's safety by making sure all of its employees have a satisfactory CRB (Criminal Record Bureau) disclosure form and plan activities ahead to check for risks that may need to be taken into consideration.

Costs - From £12.50 per hour.

Other costs :- payment of the activity for ourselves and the person.

We mainly deal with direct payments but payment methods are discussed on meeting as well as contractual agreements.

 Direct payments may contribute to some or all of the costs. Most people who use social services from the council can receive direct payments, you will need to contact your social worker for an assessment of needs and discuss the direct payment option with them.
